An official of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) says the lack of electricity in the Federal Secretariat is because of power rationing and not because of debts owed by organisations using the complex.

NAN reports that Federal Secretariat has not been having regular electricity supply for sometime and the situation is blamed on a nine billion naira debt to AEDC.
Fadipe said it was not that organisations in the complex were cut off but that the complex was not getting supplies as it was supposed to get because of the drop in power generation nationwide.
He said the low power generation had resulted in power rationing by electricity distribution companies.
Fadipe said AEDC was a distribution company and could only distribute power supplied to it by Transmission Company of Nigeria.
He explained that since the quantum of electricity generated had decreased there was no other option for AEDC than to ration power among consumers.
“What the Federal Secretariat is experiencing today is not peculiar to the complex alone but all over the country there is power challenge.
“But there is hope that as we are moving into the rainy season the power will increase as the hydropower stations have been sustaining Nigeria in power generation.
“Soon, there will be an improvement in the power supply in the country and issue of power rationing will stop,’’ Fadipe said.
He said although many AEDC customers owed the company, the inadequacy in power supply to consumers was because of low generation.
On debts owed to AEDC by agencies, Fadipe said the Federal Government had taken adequate measures to ensure that the organisations paid their debts.
He said since the Federal Government had given an assurance that the agencies would pay their debts, AEDC would honour the agreement.
Fadipe explained that AEDC appreciated the strategic status of the Federal Secretariat but the company’s hands were tied in terms of supply the complex enough electricity at present.
He appealed to all the AEDC customers to bear with the company and duly pay their energy bills.
